"Superbugs" - What are They ?

Super = Superior
Bug = Disease producing microorganism
Superbugs are a kind of resistant bacteria who have developed resistance to most of the well known and highly potent antibiotics.Named after the Indian capital, it is a gene carried by bacteria that causes gastric problems, enters the blood stream and may cause multiple organ failure leading to death.
The gene has been named as NDM-1 (New Delhi Metallo-Beta-Lactamase-1) after a Swedish patient was reportedly found infected with the same when he underwent a Surgery in New Delhi in 2008.
Till now only two types of bacteria have been found associate with this superbug :
1.Escherichia coli
2.Klebsiella pneumoniae
These organisms have been found resistant to a reserved class of antibiotics Carbepenems.Now they are sensitive only to Tigecycline and Colistin.
The main reason behind arousal of these microorganisms is supposed to be the reckless use of antibiotics by Humans for ailments which could be cured without or with the use of a simpler class of antibiotics. Some physicians may also be held responsible for prescribing antibiotics as an adjunct for treatment of a minor illness which could have subsided on its own or cured without any antibiotics.
Another reason could be the use of these drugs (antibiotics) in animals that are used as human foods(milk,meat,eggs,etc.)which predispose humans to infections with organisms like MRSA.
First and only case of superbug death was reported in Brussels University Hospital when a Belgian who acquired infection
after a Road Traffic Accident in South Asia (Pakistan) and died on Aug 13 2010.
This is thought to be a threat even more deadlier than Swine flu or H1N1.
